The Retrograde is 501c3 educational newsroom launched September 2024 that focuses on UTD, its people and its surrounding communities. It is the spiritual successor to The Mercury, UTD’s previous student newspaper created in 1980.

The Retrograde publishes biweekly across multiple digital platforms, which currently include our website and social media accounts with monthly print publishing. These platforms provide the UTD community with news, life and arts, sports, student and community opinions and a public forum for discussion.

The Retrograde provides our staff with opportunities to strengthen their skills as writers, artists, photographers, editors and leaders. We encourage critical thinking and interdisciplinary approaches through our independent editorial judgments made by student leaders from a wide variety of backgrounds, disciplines and expertise.

The Retrograde is committed to prioritizing excellence and fairness at every level — both within our contributors and across our coverage. We are dedicated to teaching our members the fundamental principles and skills of journalism as they explore, document and report on affairs at UTD. Not only do we aim to inform and entertain our readers, but we serve the UTD community by investigating crucial subjects and helping hold those in power accountable.

The Retrograde is a publication by students and for students. While we will happily cover non-student members of UTD, our coverage aims to enrich the student body and reflect the broad range of perspectives within our campus student population first and foremost.

The Retrograde operates entirely independently of UTD. All finances, employment, content and outreach are managed exclusively by UTD students. The Retrograde is overseen by a board of directors composed of UTD faculty, professional journalists and student media mentors.

Views expressed within The Retrograde are diverse and are not necessarily representative of the views of our editorial board, UTD administrators, faculty, staff, students or other constituencies.
